Critics at the 1985 Venice Film Festival compared it to Ingmar Bergman’s Autumn Sonata but with a distinctly Mediterranean melancholy. For years, Piccoli Fuochi existed only as a deteriorating 35mm print held by the Cineteca di Bologna. A handful of VHS tapes were released in Italy in 1986, but they contained no subtitles and were pan-and-scan (cropping Varchi’s beautiful widescreen cinematography).
