Enter the format. Originally designed for arcade games in MAME, CHD has become the gold standard for compressing Sega Saturn ROMs.

For collectors, are the only practical way to manage a full library. The original Saturn had over 1,000 games. In ISO format, that is roughly 600GB. In CHD format, that drops to nearly 250GB—small enough to fit on a standard microSD card for a Steam Deck or Anbernic device.

| Emulator | CHD Support | Platform | Verdict | | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | | | ✅ Full | PC / Android | Best accuracy. Needs a powerful CPU. | | Yaba Sanshiro | ✅ Full | PC / Android | Great for lower-end devices. | | Mednafen (Standalone) | ✅ Full | PC | Excellent, but requires command line. | | SSF (Saturn emulator) | ❌ No | PC | Old emulator. Must convert back to BIN/CUE. | | Kronos | ✅ Full | PC | Excellent compatibility. |

A single Sega Saturn game can be a massive 650MB ISO. When you start collecting classics like Panzer Dragoon Saga (3 discs), Deep Fear , or Guardian Heroes , your hard drive fills up fast.

In this guide, we will explain what CHD files are, why they are better than BIN/CUE or ISO, how to use them on modern emulators and handhelds (like the Steam Deck or Retroid Pocket), and how to convert your existing library. Traditionally, Sega Saturn dumps come in BIN/CUE format. This is a raw 1:1 copy of the disc. While accurate, it is inefficient.
